Journaling: A Pathway to Self-Discovery and Healing

Vintage Journal Spread by Junk The Journal

Watch this fun video by #JunkTheJournal that shows how to make
a cute vintage journal spread in soothing, neutral colors.

There are so many journaling videos on YouTube and Instagram, these days. I really love the simple style of this particular layout. It uses a lot of things that you might already have in your home or office, so it will be really easy to use the video as inspiration for creating your own.

First, start with a blank page in your favorite journal, planner or notebook. Wrinkle some plain brown paper and tear into a rectangle shape that covers a large part of your journal page (but not all of it). Add some vintage ephemera or digital printable pieces that simulate the vintage effect. Place the various layers in a way that is pleasing to your eye. I like how the artist does it in this video, but of course you should let your own creativity loose!

Some pieces that you will want to collect, either with physical items or digital ones are: cards, postage stamps, vintage ads, labels, tickets, and a variety of images. Another thing that I love to collect is paper! Lots of different types and colors of paper. You don't need a lot, for this type of journal layout. Just get a single sheet of papers that you really love, and tear or cut them into small pieces as needed for your spreads.

Washi tape is another great item to add to your journal spreads. You can cut or tear it into the length and width that you need. Use it to adhere pieces that you want to stick down, or use it as an accent to put some color or texture in a spot that you want to highlight. Some washi tape is very sticky, while others might need a little wet glue to keep them stuck to the page. I also use washi tape to reinforce vintage papers that are starting to fall apart or that need patching.

For the final touch she uses an eyelet (grommet), string, and a wax seal. I really love this layout, and it could be done in many different styles or colors, according to the theme of your journal.

All you need to add at this point is your own journaling. Write about your day, things you need to reflect on, or what makes you happy. A gratitude journal is another great idea. By focusing on what we are grateful for, our current problems tend to take up less space in our minds, which is often a great help.
